Kreegi Päevad 2024 – Cyrillius Kreek Days – celebrating the Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek’s 135th Anniversary with three concerts: in Kreek’s hometown Haapsalu, in Laulasmaa, and in Tallinn. The artistic director of the ensemble Vox Clamantis, Jaan-Eik Tulve, has chosen Kreek’s generational colleague Mart Saar’s creations to be performed besides Kreek’s.
The lives of these two great figures in Estonian music have followed a similar path: they are both graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory and worked as professors at the Tallinn Music Academy. They have contributed to the shaping of the Estonian music scene, the central choral compositions of both have been boosted by Estonian folk tunes, which they themselves have helped to collect. Listening to the works of Krieg and Saar gives an idea of the connecting points and differences between these two creative geniuses.
